Learning by Watching

July 8, 2017

One thing I will  try to get better at next academic year is to stand back and watch. Yes to not interfere especially in the maker stuff. Time is always an issue and we want to jump in to help the kids to get it ‘right’ but dont.

We dont want to jump in because….

  • We may impede natural inquiry and mistakes (learning lessons)
  • We dont give chances for failure
  • It creates dependance on us adults for thew ‘right’ answers
  • We cant see what they are thinking in the moment

The last point is crucial. If we jump in we cant see their thinking, their play and if we jump in they too are not able to explain their own thinking behind the tinkering.

Leave them alone and learn by watching.
