Power of the PLN

August 24, 2014

So I started teaching Grade 3 this week after 5 years in Grade 1.

I thought the transition would be easy enough. Ive taught grades 4 and 5 before and even had a stint in Middle school in Perth way back when. However for some reason this week has been extremely challenging. I know the kids, I taught them 2 years ago in Grade 1 so thats not it. The problem was getting my head out of what things look like in Grade 1 and switching gears to Grade 3. Mainly I am struggling with Math. I obviously want to make fun, challenging and authentic. Inquiry based. I believe math is very inquiry based.  Im a fan of @BruceFerrington and cant recommend his blog enough. He shares some very informative stuff.

So I am still figuring it all out and I will figure it out, but this post isn’t about my challenges and struggles, as teachers we do this all the time right? We learn, unlearn and relearn stuff. It’s about the awesome people I have in my learning community to lean on when I need it. So I sent this tweet on Saturday night and went to sleep feeling a bit frustrated.

shotI awoke to a plethora of resources, words of encouragement, ideas and suggestions from my community. I am very grateful to those who took the time to help me out. Then I started to wonder, wow what would I do without these awesome educators in my community?  How can teachers NOT want to build their own learning community to learn with. To learn from. This really needs to be underscored in our school community, to build relationships and share knowledge and experience because our clients are the same. We all have the same goal.

So this weekend confirmed what I believed and even strengthened that belief. Building a community of learners (which doesn’t happen over night) has been the best way to develop my own teaching skills and ability. I don’t need tons of PD money to be spent on me but I need connections, relationships and a strong learning community to challenge me, help me to make me the best teacher I can be. If you are just starting you journey on building your community dont give up. Keep at it. It will be the best investment you’ve ever made. I pr0ved it today.

Many thanks.

Can’t agree more. I am beginning to feel that the PLN and social media is replacing the traditional professional association these days for practical support and resources. Hope you enjoy the Year 3 journey – it is one of the most formative years in learning.
